I know she had her follow-up appointment with her doctor last week, so now I need to find a way to get her alone for the night. Fiona’s picture flashes across my phone, and I smile as I answer. “OH MY GOD!” My heart stops then beats erratically when I hear her screams through the phone.

“Calm down, Fiona. Is something wrong with Charlie? Do you need an ambulance?” As I’m asking the questions, a call comes through from the security company watching her house, but I don’t want to click over to answer. Her sobs are so loud; I can’t understand her words. I’m just about to call nine-one-one when Margo rushes in with a cellphone.

She signals for me to take the call. “It’s her security.” I hand Margo my phone with Fiona and take the call. Margo continues talking to Fiona, trying to help calm her. The security guard explains the situation, and I’m so fucking pissed I want to kill someone. Those idiots don’t know who the fuck they’re taking on.

While I rush to Fiona’s to take care of her, I have Margo arrange a meeting with Dominic. I want to take the idiots squared down completely. I convince Fiona to pack some things and come to my house with Charlie since the idiots can’t get anywhere near them in my gated community. After I have the two of them settled in their rooms, my mom offers to stay with Fiona while I meet with Dominic to find out what we’re facing.

He meets me at my office, and I can tell by the look on his face that I’m not going to like what he has to say. “Basically, they’re suing for full custody of the baby. Saying, as a married couple, they would be better suited to take care of him. They really want money from you.” He shakes his head, and the top of my head feels like it’s going to explode.

“That fucking asshole doesn’t want his son. He sent a sleaze-ball to the hospital to threaten Fiona not to name him on the birth certificate,” I remind Dominic.

“That’s not how they’re describing things. They’re saying you and Fiona are trying to steal Dan’s baby from him. Giving a sob story. Their lawyer is going to the media soon. It’s going to be a shit show,” Dominic warns. My lawyer is usually unflappable, but right now he looks worried, and I realize this is going to get messy.
